MMORPG
From Gekkeiju Online
Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games are one of the most popular game genre nowadays. The sad fact about the genre is that way too many crappy MMORPGs come out every year. Most of these MMORPGs shouldn't actually even be considered RPGs as they're just some hack & slash arcade games with some minor character development and items.
Most of these MMORPGs nowadays are just clones of each other with slightly different graphics. None of them really bring anything new to the genre. One reason for this is the fact that adding new unique features can mean that the game won't sell. Because of this, only some indie projects are really able to introduce these features into the real Online RPGs.
Crappy MMORPGs usually come from Asia. Reasons for this is the fact that it's much cheaper to get a bunch of code slaves to perform the tasks. The Internet connections are also much cheaper. This allows most of these crappy games to run 'free' or in some endless 'beta' testing. Sadly these quickly made crappy games are indeed always just clones of each other or some popular MMORPG. They're also always lacking the RPG element.
The worst thing is that most today's gamers don't understand these facts as they're only attracted by the flashy graphics and special effects. Naturally these crappy MMORPGs always come with state-of-art graphics. This is the only way for them to get players. This sadly steals players from games with not-so-good graphics even though featurewise the case would be very different.
The only way to save today's MMORPG industry is to leave alone all the hack & slash games from Asia and prioritize features. This will never happen as long as everyone just pays attenttion to these crappy games instead of being brave enough to try something different.
